One Regret

It only takes a moment
to ruin a life

a nagging suspicion

sleepless nights

questions unasked until
they burn a hole in
your heart

emotions flying like dust
in the arms of tornado

whirling shouts and screams
draining tears and tiredness

it’s too much

too little

too late

eyes open to truth
don’t always need the kind of proof
demanded in court

an averted glance
a tone too high and lilting
for the topic

an answer avoided

missing time

love made less and less
as the nights pass and
the TV becomes
the preferred companion

on date night

the gulf non-physical
felt

in silent dinners
empty beds
and endless fights

one choice
one regret
never to forget

and it’s done.
